the first day of school (or) i survived!
so...definitely the typical first day of teaching for most teachers..i think...ended up with me in tears because it wasn't all that i expected...which i should have expected! the kids were alright..maybe a little chatty but it might be for several reasons, including first day back, mass before i knew their names, no outside recess, and just hyperness. tomorrow will be better...not great...but the day after that will be good too and the day after that will be just a little better.
i've come this far already, i can't believe it. first it was "i can't believe i'm moving to dc", then it was "i can't believe i have a classroom", then "i can't believe the first day of school is tomorrow", and now it's "i can't believe the first day of school is over"...
and the giant realization that not only did i have to plan for today but i have to plan for tomorrow and the next day and the day after that. and lo and behold, i need to plan for the rest of the month, the year, and the next year until june!
i'll never forget what matt johnson, former principal of my school said when he interviewed me...he said that teaching is the only profession in which a first year candidate is expected to do the same work as someone who has been teaching for 20 years. amazing, isn't it?
